Map of the South of France:

Dividing the south of France into coherent tourist areas is not an easy task, since the official regions do not always match either the boundaries of historic provinces or areas that logically go together. For instance, while most of the Languedoc region is made up of Mediterranean coastal plain and its direct hinterland, the Lozère department is a high mountain plateau much of it over 1000 metres, and very different from the rest of the region.   Gitelink has chosen to divide the south of France into areas that are more logically coherent units in terms of climate and landscape.

Area 5 : The mountain areas - from the Massif Central to the Savoy Alps and the Jura
Area 6 : The Pyrenees, Midi Toulousain and Mediterranean regions including the southern Alps

  • Area 5 a : Gites in the Massif Central. France's central highland area consisting of the regions of Limousin and Auvergne: not too touristy, plenty of wild country, much appreciated by those in search of holidays away from it all.
  • Area 5 b :  Gites in the Savoy Alps and the Jura, plus the Lyon Area. Mostly hilly or mountainous country. The Alps offer high mountain scenery, the Jura is an older and less dramatic range of mountains running along the Swiss border north of Geneva.
  • Area 5 c Gites from the Lot to the Ardèche :  The dry southern parts of the Massif Central. Mostly limestone terrain, which is drier than areas further north. Lots of sparsely populated areas. The high "Causses" from Aveyron to Lozère, are very wild.
  • Area 6 a : Gites in the Pyrenees and  Midi Toulousain, the area around Toulouse, including a good part of historic Gascony. High mountains along the Pyrenean chain, mostly gently undulating farmland across the rest of this area.
  • Area 6 b : Gites in Languedoc - Rousillon : The western part of France's Mediterranean coastal strip. A relatively narrow low-lying coastal strip, backed by a very dry hinternland, including the eastern end of the Pyrenees, the Montagne Noire and the lower end of the Cevennes.
  • Area 6 c : Gites in Provence and on the French Riviera, plus their hinterland, which includes the dry southern Alps. Along the coast, this is France's most popular tourist region; inland it is also popular, though not on the same scale.
