| For anyone planning holidays in France, gites or self-catering cottages to rent can offer an attractive and economic alternative to hotels. The Gitelink directory includes a range of selected holiday cottages, villas, gites de France and reasonably-priced places to stay. The directory offers gites throughout France from the most popular regions such as Brittany, the Loire and the South of France, to relatively undiscovered areas including the Auvergne and Lorraine. Many of the properties can be booked directly with English-speaking owners, avoiding agency fees and commissions, and can be paid for in sterling or euros. Specific pages of this directory also provide travellers with a selection of chateaux and manors, independent hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation for short stopovers or longer stays.

Searching by capacity: many gites have flexible capacity, and do not indicate a precise figure in their directory listing. Those that do use many different expressions. To search on capacity, use search terms (between inverted commas) such as "for 4" or "sleeping 6" or "up to 8". But it is probably better to choose a region, then check through the list of gites avaialble.

While many gites are quickly booked up in the peak summer months of July and August, there is usually a good choice even for last minute bookings in spring and early summer – May and June – and in late summer and Autumn. September is a great month for holidaying in France, with the weather still generally warm, but no more crowds.
Most gites and holiday cottage rentals in the directory can be booked directly with the owners; in some cases, bookings must be made through Gites de France.
