Valencia & Murcia

   Murcia and Valencia in brief:
The regions of Valencia and Murcia look steadfastly out to sea. In this dry central eastern part of Spain, it is on the coastal strip that the large majority of the population is concentrated; and it is a population that has vastly expanded in recent decades with the over-development of mile after mile of coastal resorts, "urbanizaciones" and their associated infrasructure. Yet the coastline is long, and there are still some relatively unspoiled sections of beach, or rocky coves, for those who want to get away from the crowds.
    Apart from tourism, the main activity in this region is agriculture, particularly in the fertile valleys of Murcia, where large surfaces are given over to the production of fruit and vegetables. Valencia is the capital of the Spanish orange and citrus industry. The Moors introduced the cultivation of palm trees into this area, and the city of Elche, near Alicante, boasts Europe's only extensive palm groves.
    Generally speaking this is a dry region, and the hills inland from the coast are arid and rocky, like much of Spain.  Small villages  and towns cling to hillsides, or stand beside rivers or streams; but this inland area is sparsely populated, and a world apart from the thronging crowds of Benidorm or La Manga.
    Culturally, the region has plenty to offer, from the historic centres of Valencia and Murcia, to the palm groves of Elche and the moorish remains at Alicante, Lorca and elsewhere.

The Canaries: Grand Canary, Tenerife, etc. situated south-west of Spain, in the Atlantic ocean, these volcanic islands are the most southerly point of Europe.

The Balearics: Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza, etc. These Mediterranean islands lie east of the Valencian coast.

    Murcie et Valence en bref.
L'es régions de Valence et de Murcie sont résolument tournées vers la mer. Dans cette partie aride de l'est espagnol, c'est sur la bande côtière que la population est concentrée; et c'est une population qui s'est beaucoup accrue au cours des dernières décennies, avec le développement en ruban de stations balnéaires, lotissements et leur infrastructure. Mais la côte est longue, et il n'est pas trop difficile de dénicher des plages encore relativement indemnes, et des baies rocheuses.
    A côté du tourisme, l'activité principale de cette région est l'agriculture, particulièrement dans les grands champs et vergers de Murcie, qui produisent fruits et légumes pour toute l'Europe. Valence est la capitale de l'orange et du citron. Autrefois les Maurs ont introduit la culture des palmiers dans cette région, et la dans ville d'Elche on trouve la seule grande palmeraie historique d'Europe.
    En général ces régions sont sèches, et les collines au delà de la bande côtière sont arides et rocheuses,  comme souvent en Espagne. De petits villages s'accrochent aux flancs des montagnes ou sur les les berges des rivières. Mais la montagne est peu peuplée, et on s'y sent très loin des foules des stations balnéaires comme Benidorm ou Torrevieja.
    Ces régions ont beaucoup à offrir en termes de culture, allant des centres historiques de Murcie et de Valence, aux palmeraies d'Elche, ou aux vestiges mauresques qu'on trouve à Alicante, à Lorca ou ailleurs.
