B
and B in France - a generally affordable alternative
To the question "How much does
b&b cost in France?" the answer is quite possibly "Not as much
as you thought." And many owners have held their prices for the past
few years, and in some cases even reduced them.
Bed and Breakfast accommodation comes
in many forms; and prices vary according to season, location and
quality. The Gitelink BandB-in-France directory is
essentially made up of friendly B and Bs offering good value for
money.
Good value B&Bs are not
necessarily cheap B&Bs. B&Bs are
businesses, not charities, and for many owners they are a vital source
of income. Proprietors generally therefore tend to offer accommodation
at, or below, the market rates for hotels in their area; but
better value for money.
The cost of B&B accommodation will vary
from region to region, and according to basic principles of supply and
demand. B&B's in smart Alpine ski resorts or
up-market locations on the French Riviera may actually charge more than
hotels, as they are offering a rare luxury product - the privacy and
space of a private residence in a location where most other guests are
packed into hotels. But in most places, B&B accommodation is cheaper than
hotel accommodation for a similar standard of quality and service; and
there are also plenty of B&Bs offering really good service and
quality for the price of a room in a basic budget hotel.
B&B
rates in 2025 - France
Unlike hotels which quote a price for a room, B&Bs usually
quote different prices per room according to the number of guests
sharing. A commonly charged rate is 60 €uros per night for a
double
room for two people – which is cheaper than most budget
hotels, once you add in the cost of breakfast which is not included in
hotel room rates. You may even get a swimming pool for the
price! In most ordinary B&Bs, expect therefore to
pay between 60 € and 120 € per night for two people
in
2025.
More sophisticated B&Bs - those
that offer something more than just a room and a comfy bed - may well
charge up to 150 € a night for a double room and in most cases
the
price will be justified. Beyond 150 € a night for a double
room, the
price has to be justified by the location and/or the amenities offered,
notably fully en-suite accommodation and extras such as a heated pool
or even a sauna.
Most of the bed and breakfast accommodation in the
Gitelink / BandB-in-France directory comes in at between 50 €
and 85 €
per night for a double room, and offers excellent value compared to
hotel accommodation of similar quality. Some B&Bs are more
expensive, specially in
high season; but the price is justified; a few even charge less.
For British travellers, 60 € per night for a double
room
works
out as the equivalent of about £25 per person per night
– which is considerably cheaper than the average for
B&B in the
UK.
Many French B&Bs also offer the option of
"table
d'hôte", in other words an evening meal too; but this
normally has to bef booked in
advance. B&B's that do not offer evening meals
normally direct their guests to a nearby restaurant
It is important to remember, when comparing
B&B rates and hotel rates in France, that B&Bs
virtually always
include breakfast in their prices, most hotels do not. |
